Challenge

The global fashion industry faces a hidden sustainability challenge that is size-related returns. Over 40% of all online clothing purchases are returned, and more than 70% of those returns are due to size and fit issues. This is because online shoppers face a fragmented experience across retailers. Each return doubles transportation emissions, adds packaging waste, and often leads to returned items ending in the landfills since sorting through them is too expensive for companies.

Approach

Traditional fit solutions rely on brand adoption; they require licensing, integration, and direct cooperation from retailers. This limits their reach and keeps control in the hands of brands.
Asterix disrupts that model by being completely independent, cross-platform, and user-driven, giving power and ownership to the shopper.

Effortless onboarding with simple prompts

Conducted a comparative analysis of competitors based on the data collected, accuracy levels, user effort level, user privacy, ease of integration and success level. Synthesizng the learnings, I prioritized usability and speed, focusing on accurate recommendations rather than relying on complex, photorealistic simulations.

Instead of invasive questions about the users exact body measurements which leaves more room for human error either from incorrect scales or subconscious biases. The personalized fit recommendations are based on gender, age, height, weight, and preferred fit style.
Users can easily and quickly create their avatars by uploading a photo that is immediately encrypted. Further customization of characters according to their likeness by choosing from a set of hairstyles and body mass distributions.

Lightweight suggestions with overlaying widget

Designed to proactively help users find their right size. The widget becomes active when an the algorithm finds that the user has picked the wrong size. A pop appears with a gentle recommendation, the widget can be expanded through a smooth interaction and more information can be found on this recommendation, creating a sense of depth, continuity, and instant access to key details without switching screens.

The widget houses more features. A simple tap lets users copy any valid coupons they might have, enhancing their overall shopping experience. Intelligent recognition automatically detects when users have multiple sizes of the same product in their cart, this helps avoid bracketing among shoppers.

Comparison at a glance

Traditional size charts mention many detailed measurements, it became essential to reduce the effort required to compare them to find the right fit. Instead of making users read complex sizing charts, the experience was designed around quick visualizations. A simple tap opens the try-on feature instantly. Shoppers can then visually compare the items on their digital avatar, with guides showing the measurements of the item that matches those of the body.

A star-icon makes the recommended fit very easily understandable and the rounded buttons efficiently flip through different sizes. Shoppers can also add items from their own closet to the app and mix-and-match with items in the wishlist, before buying them. This approach not only reduces the chances of return but also created a sense of direct, tactile connection with the item, making shopping smarter, and more engaging.

Rewards for positive reinforcement

Leveraging smart insights, the shopper's kept and bought statistics are calculated and presented, offering motivation. The shopper can also look at their shopping history where purchase tracking logs kept and returned items, helping the system improve accuracy over time.

Streaks offer a gratifying experience that highlights shoppers’ sustainable habits. After a certain streak is maintained, shoppers can claim their reward of discounts and offers, tailored to their shopping style. The reward system encourages user to further develop responsible shopping habits and stray away from bracketing, driving engagement and fostering retention.

In conclusion,

Asterix predictably delivers measurable impact across environmental, behavioral, and economic dimensions. Even a 10% reduction in return rates across major retailers can save thousands of tons of CO₂ annually. It reduces waste, shipping emissions, and repackaging while improving user confidence and satisfaction.

For younger, digital-first shoppers, Asterix turns technology and fashion into a platform that promotes mindful consumption. By putting control in the user’s hands, Asterix aligns personal satisfaction with planetary well-being, proving that sustainability can start with something as simple as choosing the right size.
